To qualify as a Peer Recovery Coach, applicants must have personal lived experience with substance use recovery, mental health recovery, or co-occurring recovery.
Applicants should be able to share their lived experience ethically, responsibly, and in a way that supports the recovery of others. Lived experience is used as a tool for connection and encouragement, not clinical advice or personal storytelling without purpose.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Must be 18 years of age or older
High school diploma or GED
Demonstrated stability in recovery (length determined by program and certification standards)
Ability to pass a background check (a prior conviction does not automatically disqualify an applicant. Background information is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with consideration given to the nature of the offense, time since occurrence, evidence of rehabilitation, and relevance to the role.)
Commitment to ethical guidelines, confidentiality, and professional boundaries
Willingness to receive supervision and work as part of a multidisciplinary team

Peer Recovery Coaches are expected to complete:
A Colorado-approved Peer Recovery Coach training program
Eligibility for or active pursuit of Colorado Peer & Family Support (CPFS) certification
Core competencies include:
Active listening and clear communication
Strong boundaries and emotional regulation
Empathy without judgment or over-identification
Cultural humility and respect for multiple recovery pathways
Basic documentation and professional conduct
Ongoing requirements include:
Completion of continuing education (CEUs) and adherence to Colorado CPFS renewal standards.
The following experience or credentials are considered a plus but are not required to apply:
Current Colorado Peer & Family Support (CPFS) certification
Professional fitness credentials such as CF-L1, CF-L2, or CPT (Certified Personal Trainer)
CPR / AED certification
Additional education or training related to recovery or behavioral health, including:
CAT (Certified Addiction Technician)
CAS (Certified Addiction Specialist)
Trauma-informed care or behavioral health coursework
