  • To qualify as a Peer Recovery Coach, applicants must have personal lived experience with substance use recovery, mental health recovery, or co-occurring recovery.

Applicants should be able to share their lived experience ethically, responsibly, and in a way that supports the recovery of others. Lived experience is used as a tool for connection and encouragement, not clinical advice or personal storytelling without purpose.

    • Must be 18 years of age or older

    • High school diploma or GED

    • Demonstrated stability in recovery (length determined by program and certification standards)

    • Ability to pass a background check (a prior conviction does not automatically disqualify an applicant. Background information is reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with consideration given to the nature of the offense, time since occurrence, evidence of rehabilitation, and relevance to the role.)

    • Commitment to ethical guidelines, confidentiality, and professional boundaries

    • Willingness to receive supervision and work as part of a multidisciplinary team

  • Peer Recovery Coaches are expected to complete:

    • Empathy without judgment or over-identification

    • Cultural humility and respect for multiple recovery pathways

    • Basic documentation and professional conduct

    Ongoing requirements include:

    • Completion of continuing education (CEUs) and adherence to Colorado CPFS renewal standards.

The following experience or credentials are considered a plus but are not required to apply:

    • Professional fitness credentials such as CF-L1, CF-L2, or CPT (Certified Personal Trainer)

    • CPR / AED certification

    • Additional education or training related to recovery or behavioral health, including:

    • CAT (Certified Addiction Technician)
